Effective Inspections for Efficient Fitness for Service Assessment

A Fitness for Service (FFS) assessment is a multidisciplinary engineering approach used to determine if plant equipment is fit to continue operation for some desired future period. The API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 recommended practice outlines the inspection data requirements specific to a damage mechanism or flaw type. In many cases, inspectors often do not pay enough attention to the detail of what may be required in compiling the data, and the FFS engineer may have to request more information, leading to reinspection of the same equipment, project delays and additional evaluation costs.

Morteza K. Jafari, P.E.

Morteza K. Jafari, P.E., is Senior Director of Asset Integrity Management at Сòòò½ÊÓƵ and a voting member of the ASME/API joint committee on fitness for service (API 579-1/ASME FFS-1). He is a senior registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) with over 30 years of experience in integrity management, welding engineering, mechanical engineering, fitness for service (FFS), risk based inspection, quality assurance (QA), quality control (QC), inspection and nondestructive test (NDT) evaluations, auditing, and training of personnel working in the oil, gas and chemical industries, on structural steel buildings and bridges, as well as in the nuclear industry.

Jafari has provided process equipment engineering for gas storage, gathering fields, and transmission and distribution facilities. He has gained practical experience working on both domestic and international projects in field construction and manufacturing environments. Jafari is responsible for developing equipment specifications and records, equipment design and re-rate calculations, FFS, working with destructive and NDT equipment, testing/inspection and QC of parts used for infrastructure and in oil and gas fields, corrosion control of internal and external equipment, and supervision of technicians and engineers. Additionally, he prepares bids, proposals and reports; develops QA/QC manuals, specifications and procedures; organizes QA/QC personnel; designs and implements QA/QC programs; and is involved in the development, training and qualification of NDT procedures.
